There have been so many good books released in the last month. Merry Christmas to me. 🙂 Here’s one that really tickled my fancy. Wager for a Wife by Karen Tuft. It’s a delightful Regency Romance with a unique twist and superbly done romantic heart-tugging and pulling that I couldn’t help but love. Definitely my favorite I’ve read by this author.
William Barlow’s life has been forever altered: his estranged father is dead, and William has inherited the title of Viscount Farleigh. Along with the title comes a neglected estate, an enormous amount of gambling debt, and one astounding acquisition that will turn William’s world upside down . . . It is her first London Season, and Lady Louisa Hargreaves could not be more pleased. She has attracted the attention of the Earl of Kerridge, and the two are on the cusp of an official betrothal. That is, until she learns of a generations-old family debt: her grandfather gambled her hand in marriage and lost, and now Louisa must pay the price. She will marry not the earl but a man she just met, who has taken her freedom in one fell swoop. Even as she struggles to understand the handsome and aloof man she is to wed, Louisa is irresistibly drawn to him—and he to her. But she soon realizes he is harboring secrets, and as her wedding day approaches, she must discover what her future husband is hiding before she makes the gravest mistake of her life.
This was an amazing Regency romance. I adored this book, gobbling it up in 2 days. The characters had many delicious layers that got slowly peeled away as the story plot deepened. I loved William’s demons, and the misunderstandings that popped up between the couple because one was so quiet, and the other was an extrovert. The side characters were delightful as well, which is always an added bonus to a novel. The romantic angst between the hero and heroine was perfectly done—the stolen kisses, the yearning, confusion, and ache between them. Such a fulfilling book to read. I highly recommend this one. There is NOTHING I disliked about it. It’s a winner through and through. A decadent dessert for readers of romance.
First line: The Honorable William Barlow became the fourth Viscount Farleigh in the usual way—with the death of the third viscount.
It was a strange, empty feeling—to have been surrounded by her words and her open expressions and then to have them all suddenly closed off from him. It was like being a starving man who’d tasted a banquet and then had it snatched away before he could be filled.
