Here’s the blurb:

Renowned actress Ruby Chadwick, The Darling of Drury Lane, has long planned and prepared for her final performance. With exceptional beauty comes the unwanted attention of men, and after years of fending off odious suitors, Ruby is ready to leave it all behind in favor of a quiet life. The first step is to reclaim a piece of her past: her true identity as Lavinia Fernley. But leaving town unnoticed proves impossible, and in one desperate moment, she embarks on the greatest act of her life when she throws herself into the arms of a stranger to avoid recognition.

Lucas Jennings is shocked to find the stunning redhead in his arms, but something moves him to play along with her ruse when she calls him her husband. This charade marks the start of an unpredictable journey as he escorts the lovely Lavinia and her traveling companions to Primrose Farm, far from the glaring lights of London. Soon, the tables are turned when Lucas introduces Lavinia to his family—as his fiancée. Before long, their mutual deception begins to feel all too real. But when the truth of her past is revealed, will Lavinia’s dream of a happy ending slip through her fingers?

My review

This regency romance features Ruby Chadwick, a renowned actress who has saved up enough money to escape her fake life and start a new ‘normal’ life as her true self–Lavinia. But when she runs into trouble leaving town, she forces herself into the arms of a stranger and calls him husband to escape a sinister man who has less than honorable intentions.

Lucas is shocked when an older woman thrusts herself upon him and urges him to play along to get her out of that inn. But when he realizes she’s wearing makeup and a costume, he doesn’t know what to think about the woman. I don’t want to spoil anything, but these two get pulled into an elaborate deception, along with Artie and Delia, two elderly actors, and Hannah, Lavinia’s nurse and protector, as Lucas introduces her to his family up north as his betrothed when he returns home from the war.

4 DeliciousThis story has some super funny parts. The actor/actress theme was hilarious, especially with the side characters. Delia and Artie are a hoot. I was pulled into their world very easily and grew to love Lavinia’s sweet, but misunderstood character. Thankfully, Lucas came to understand her as he grew himself. The characters provided a unique take on this regency romance that made it distinct from others I’ve read. I’ve rated it a 5 on Amazon and Goodreads, and a 4 on my very critical Sweet Scale. It’s a delicious read!
