Betrayed – A Thrilling Read

I love reading! (You probably know that by now.) And I love reviewing a good book, and Betrayed by Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen was an exciting story I had a hard time putting down to do dreary, necessary work at home. Yes, laundry got ignored and there are some white shirts that now need to be ironed badly, but it was worth the extra ironing to finish this intense mystery and not have it plaguing my mind at bedtime. (I like my sleep)

Here’s the synopsis:

1851: Niagara Falls, New York

The evidence has been well hidden—the Thayers were confident that it was safe from the clutches of the ruthless Murphy Gang. But is has all been in vain. The lawless group is closing in on the family homestead, and seven-year-old Penny is given only one instruction: Run.

After two long years eagerly anticipating her fiance’s return, twenty-year-old Julia Barrett is ready to make a fresh start with Adam Wolcott—even if it means putting her dream of traveling west with the Mormons on hold. But when Adam’s return is overshadowed by the unexpected arrival of a young orphan girl in desperate need of help, Julia is drawn into a dangerous mystery that will threaten all she holds dear.

Charged with the protection of little Penny, Julia quickly finds herself relying on the help of Tom Harrison, an endearing young man who has long admired her from afar. Torn between two suitors, Julia soon uncovers a shocking trail of corruption and deceit—a discovery that pulls her inescapably into the race to locate telling evidence that Penny’s family gave their lives to protect.

My Review

This book starts out with a bang and a big fire. Really! A child (Penny) is left alone in the world and must trust strangers to take care of her. Julia is happy with her world when her fiancé, Adam, returns home after a two year absence. She is more in love than ever, but can’t help the doubts that nag at her about whether she really knows him, especially as her family is always bringing up concerns about him. (The Mom in me wanted to whap sense in her, but Romantic Me totally understood where she was coming from doting on her handsome hero) When a rugged stranger, Tom Harrison, shows up with life-changing news, Julia’s heart is twisted as she struggles to forgive and learn who to trust with her heart and her secrets. The suspense is great in this one; the story is well edited and polished, and I really liked the characters and setting near Niagara Falls.  And bonus, the cover is beautiful! I love a book that looks good on my coffee table.

So check Betrayed out. You won’t regret it. Would I ever betray you? [insert evil laughter here]

    • Yeah, me too. Different settings in another point in time make me feel like I’m learning without having to read a boring history book.
